What Is a Valve Spring?

A valve spring is a critical elastic component in an engine's valvetrain system. It ensures that each valve closes promptly and maintains a reliable seal against the valve seat during every cycle. Valve springs operate under high-frequency reciprocating motion, alternating loads, and elevated temperatures, so they must retain stable spring force and fatigue life over extended service. Most are made from high-quality spring steel and go through coiling, heat treatment, end grinding, and surface treatment to control wire diameter, coil count, free length, spring rate, and end squareness. Spring selection should consider valve lift, RPM range, installation space, and operating temperature. Consistent wire diameter, correct model identification, and traceable material information are key to confirming valve spring fit and reliability.

Customizable Parameters

Key specifications can be tailored to your application. Contact our engineering team to confirm the achievable range for your project.

Parameter
Typical Range / Basis
Engineering Notes / Why It Matters
Wire Diameter
1.3 mm – 6.5 mm
Dictates the spring's stress level and fatigue life. A smaller wire reduces valvetrain mass but increases stress, risking valve float at high RPM. Final sizing must balance load capacity against the available installation space.
Outer Diameter
32.5 mm – 39.4 mm
Must fit precisely into the cylinder head spring pocket and retainer without interference. Proper OD clearance prevents spring surge and ensures the spring does not rub against the head casting.
Free Length
61 mm – 67 mm
Calculated backward from the target installed height and valve lift. If the free length is too long, it risks coil bind; if too short, it fails to provide adequate seat pressure, causing valve leakage.
Installed Height
34 mm – 40 mm
Measured from the spring seat to the retainer with the valve closed. A minor deviation in installed height significantly alters seat pressure. This dimension is critical for preventing valve bounce and ensuring camshaft follower contact.
Coil Bind Height
28.7 mm – 33.8 mm
The absolute limit of compression. Engineers must ensure a minimum clearance (typically ≥ 1.27 mm / 0.050") at maximum valve lift. Exceeding this limit causes coil clash, leading to catastrophic spring failure.
Spring Rate
35 N/mm – 54 N/mm
Defines how much force increases per millimeter of lift. A higher rate controls valve motion better at high RPM but increases stress on the camshaft and lifter. Determined by wire diameter and active coil count.
Seat Pressure
Example: 369 N at 33.7 mm installed height
The force holding the valve closed. Insufficient seat pressure causes compression loss and valve leakage. Excessive seat pressure accelerates cam lobe wear and increases friction. Always specified with its installed height.
Open Pressure
Example: 1023 N at 12.7 mm valve lift
The force resisting valve float at maximum lift. If open pressure drops below the required threshold, the valve cannot follow the cam profile, resulting in power loss and potential piston-to-valve contact.
Material
  • VDSiCr (EN 10270-2)
  • VDSiCrV (EN 10270-2)
  • VDSiCrV + Ni (nitridable)
  • SWOSC-V / 55CrSi
Standard chrome-silicon (CrSi) wire offers excellent fatigue resistance for most applications. For extreme temperatures or heavy-duty racing, advanced grades like VDSiCrV (vanadium-alloyed) are selected to prevent stress relaxation.
Surface Treatment
  • Shot peening
  • Nitriding (nitridable grade)
  • Low-temperature stress relief (250 °C)
  • Rounded ends
Shot peening induces compressive residual stress, significantly extending fatigue life. Nitriding adds a hard case for wear resistance, while stress relief prevents dimensional distortion during high-temperature engine operation.

The values above are typical reference values. Final specifications are confirmed against the customer drawing and datasheet.

Frequently Asked Questions About Valve Springs

01 How Do Wire Diameter and Free Length Affect Valve Spring Fit and Performance?

Wire diameter, free length, coil count, and installed height directly affect valve spring load, stiffness, and coil-bind clearance. Even small differences in wire diameter or free length can change seat load and open load, which may influence valve float risk, fatigue life, and valvetrain stability at high RPM. For accurate evaluation, provide a drawing or the key specifications, including wire diameter, free length, installed height, load at installed height, material, and application details.

02 What Materials Are Used for High-Temperature Valve Springs?

Valve spring material is selected according to operating temperature, stress level, fatigue requirements, and the engine application. Common options include high-quality spring steels such as chrome-silicon and other oil-tempered spring wire grades, with surface treatment or shot peening where required. Because material choice affects fatigue resistance and load retention at high temperature, the final specification should be confirmed against the valve spring drawing, working conditions, and expected service life.

03 How Can I Tell If a Valve Spring Needs Replacement?

A valve spring should not be judged by appearance alone. Useful checks include free length, installed height load, perpendicularity, surface wear, corrosion, cracks, and signs of fatigue. Engine symptoms such as valve float, misfire, reduced power, or unstable high-RPM operation may also indicate a spring issue, but these symptoms can have other causes. Replacement intervals and inspection criteria should follow the OEM specification or the agreed maintenance plan for the engine.

04 How Do I Match the Mould Number or Part Number to My Engine Application?

The OEM part number, engine model, and valve spring drawing are the most reliable references for matching a valve spring to an engine application. A mould number or tooling number may identify the manufacturing tool used for a spring, but it does not always confirm the final engine application by itself. To avoid mismatches, cross-check the part number with dimensions, wire diameter, free length, installed height, load specifications, and material requirements before approval.

05 Can You Produce Custom Valve Springs from a Sample or Drawing?

Yes. A technical drawing is the preferred starting point for custom valve spring production. If a drawing is not available, a physical sample can help our engineering team evaluate the spring and determine whether reverse engineering is feasible. Useful information includes wire diameter, free length, coil count, installed height load, material, surface treatment, and estimated order quantity. Confidential drawings and specifications can be reviewed under an NDA before sensitive files are shared.
